The North Carolina Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers, known as NCSITE, is a professional society of persons involved in transportation engineering activities. It is affiliated with the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), an international professional society of transportation engineers.

NCSITE was established to promote sound transportation engineering practices in the planning, design, operation, and management of transportation facilities and equipment for the safe, convenient, and efficient movement of people and goods. To achieve this goal, NCSITE has adopted the following objectives:

  • Encourage qualified persons to enter the transportation
    engineering profession.
  • Encourage professional training and development of persons
    engaged in transportation engineering.
  • Develop increased coordination and cooperation with local governing bodies, private organizations, professional engineering groups, and ITE.
  • Increase public awareness and involvement in transportation engineering activities.
  • Stimulate transportation-related research activities.
  • Promote communication between persons with mutual interests in transportation engineering.
  • Establish an exchange of professional information and maintain a centralized point of reference and action for transportation engineering professionals.
  • Represent the interests of members in the transportation engineering profession when transportation-related legislation and policy matters are represented.
    Organization

The North Carolina Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (NCSITE) was founded on May 1963 as the North Carolina Division of the Southern Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers. In 1989, the North Carolina Division became an officially chartered Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers. NCSITE is governed by the regulations contained within the charter, along with established by-laws adopted by the membership. This charter defines the Section's jurisdictional boundaries as the state of North Carolina, although membership is not limited to persons residing in this area.
NCSITE is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of a president, vice president, secretary-treasurer, three directors, and the immediate past president. The Board of Directors is elected by the membership and serve one-year terms. NCSITE also elects a representative to serve on the ITE District 5 Board of Directors.

NCSITE has formal committees which are involved in continuing education, legislation, technical activities, the newsletter and publicity, and relations with participating organizations. Members are urged to join a committee and actively participate in and contribute to the development of the transportation engineering profession.

Student Chapters

One objective of NCSITE is to encourage undergraduate and graduate students of ITE-affiliated universities to enter the transportation engineering profession. Currently, NCSITE supports student chapters at North Carolina State University, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and North Carolina A&T State University. One part of this support involves awarding four Section-sponsored scholarships each year to deserving student chapter members. Any student wishing to join a student chapter or NCSITE should consult with the appropriate student faculty representative for membership information.

Benefits

At the present time, more than 500 persons from virtually every type of transportation engineering and planning related background are members of NCSITE. Members are employed by federal, state, and local governments, as well as by private enterprises. In addition, college students enrolled in transportation-related courses are encouraged to join NCSITE.

In NCSITE, members have the opportunity to:

  • Join any of the various committees and become active participants in the transportation engineering profession.
