SimCap User Group

(Simulation and Capacity Analysis User Group)

Where does SimCap stand today?

The SimCap User Group held two introductory lunch & learn sessions in June 2006 – at that point still under the old acronym: ‘SMUG’. The meetings in Raleigh and Charlotte were well attended and demonstrated from the NCSITE membership a general interest and a need for this group.

The meetings provided interested parties an overview of the goals and vision of SimCap and resulted in the formation of a six-member SimCap Steering Committee.

  • Bastian Schroeder, NCSU-ITRE, Raleigh, NC (Chair)
  • Jeff Dale, Kimley-Horn and Associates, Raleigh, NC
  • Radha Krishna Swayampakala, RS&H, Charlotte, NC
  • Bowman Kelly, City of Raleigh, Raleigh, NC
  • Will Letchworth, Wilbur Smith Associates, Raleigh, NC
  • Matt Davis, Stantec Consulting, Wilmington, DE (Founder & Past Chair)

In addition to creating the webpage, the steering committee has initiated conversations with various software developers and is working to host representatives for several half-day workshops in North Carolina. The steering committee also is building a membership base while working towards outlining the future steps of the User Group.

Ideas for future initiatives include:

  • Presentations tied to the NCSITE Annual Meeting and other regional events
  • Creation of a ‘model decision matrix’ that can guide the application of different tools to different problem statements
  • Contact with national TRB committees to exchange information and increase the group’s visibility
  • Listserv of SimCap members for a simulation “hotline” / F.A.Q. list
  • Development of accepted practices for use of models not yet evaluated by NC transportation agencies
  • Guest speakers from traffic software companies (to demystify their “black boxes!”)
  • “Tips of the Month” Program
  • Educational seminars for interested students, transportation agencies, municipalities, etc..
  • Evaluation of new simulation tools (by request)
  • Emergency Evacuation Modeling
  • Simulation of Access Management Strategies
  • Unconventional Intersection Analysis
  • Roundabout Model Comparisons & Evaluations
  • Model Calibration Techniques
